Pack for the weather
Late October in Austin means warm afternoons and cool evenings β expect highs of 75β82Β°F (24β28Β°C) during sessions and a drop to 55β60Β°F (13β16Β°C) after sunset. Sunscreen and sunglasses are non-negotiable for the midday FP1 and FP3 sessions. Bring a light jacket or layer for Sunday's race run β Texas weather can swing 20 degrees in a single day. Rain is possible but rare; a compact packable poncho weighs nothing and saves you $30 at the circuit merchandise stand.
Download the app
Download the official F1 app before you fly β it carries live timing, sector data, and the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) venue map. Also grab the Austin MetroRail app for real-time train status on the Capital MetroRail Red Line, which runs direct shuttle services to COTA on race weekend. Rideshare apps (Uber and Lyft) surge 4β5x within 2 miles of the circuit post-race on Sunday β pre-book where possible or walk 10 minutes to a designated pickup zone for standard pricing.
Cash vs Card
Austin operates almost entirely on card β vendors inside COTA accept Visa, Mastercard, and contactless payments including Apple Pay. ATMs inside the venue charge $5β8 in fees; withdraw cash in downtown Austin before heading to the track. Budget $20β40 in small bills for food trucks along Cesar Chavez Street if you explore the city on session gaps. Tipping is expected: 20% at sit-down restaurants, $1β2 per drink at bars, and $1β2 per bag for hotel bell staff.
Ear protection
COTA is one of the loudest stops on the F1 calendar β peak decibels hit 130dB during standing starts. Bring foam earplugs (NRR 33) or invest in a pair of custom-fit motorsport ear defenders before the trip. Disposable plugs are sold at the circuit for $3β5 but sell out by Saturday qualifying. If you're in the grandstands near Turn 1 or Turn 12, protection is essential from the very first lap. Kids under 12 must wear ear protection β it's enforced at COTA and the circuit will provide disposables for children.
Local Etiquette
Austin is proudly "Keep Austin Weird" β embrace it. Locals are laid-back and extremely welcoming to F1 fans; wearing your team kit will spark conversations everywhere from coffee shops to live music bars on 6th Street. Tipping culture is strong: always tip your bartender at the many Rainey Street bars you'll hit during FP session gaps. Don't drive to the circuit β traffic backs up 3 hours before gates open and parking is $60β100 per day. The MetroRail shuttle from Downtown Station to COTA costs $3 each way and is the single best transport decision you'll make all weekend.
