Pack for the weather
Baku in late September sits between summer and autumn — expect highs of 24–27°C during afternoon sessions and a sharp drop to 16–18°C after sunset. Race day on Saturday kicks off at 15:00, meaning you'll bake in direct sun for the first hour and cool fast by flag-fall. Pack a lightweight layer you can tie around your waist, UV-protection sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. The Caspian wind that famously wrecked strategies in past races still whips along the boulevard grandstands — a windproof shell is worth its weight in the bag.
Download the app
Download Bolt before you land — it's the dominant ride-hailing app in Baku and a fixed-rate fare from Heydar Aliyev International Airport to the city centre runs ₼12–18 AZN (roughly $7–10 USD). During session gaps the streets around Neftçilər Avenue get heavily policed; set your pickup point at least two blocks from the circuit perimeter. Also grab the F1 app for live timing during FP1 and FP3 gaps — Baku's street circuit layout means atmosphere changes dramatically between Turns 1–3 and the Castle Section, so real-time data helps you decide where to roam.
Cash vs Card
Azerbaijan operates on a dual economy — international hotels, modern restaurants, and official F1 merchandise outlets accept Visa/Mastercard without issue. But the Old City teahouses, street food vendors, local marshrutka minibuses, and most market stalls are cash-only. Withdraw Azerbaijani Manat (AZN) from ABB or Kapital Bank ATMs inside the airport arrivals hall before you exit — airport rates are fair and you avoid the tourist-facing exchange booths on Nizami Street that skim an extra 3–4%. Keep ₼50–100 AZN in small notes for daily incidentals.
Ear protection
The Baku City Circuit is a concrete canyon — sound bounces off the fortress walls of the Old City and the glass towers on the boulevard with brutal intensity. At the Castle Section (Turns 7–10), peak decibels hit 130 dB+ as cars accelerate through the narrowest section of any F1 street circuit. Bring foam earplugs rated at 33 dB NRR as a minimum; serious fans pack reusable motorsport earmuffs. Keep one ear clear during Qualifying (16:00 Friday) — you want to hear the crowd's reaction to the inevitable wall-kissing.
Local Etiquette
Azerbaijanis are warm hosts who take hospitality seriously — accepting tea when offered is a sign of respect, not obligation. Dress modestly when entering the Old City's Palace of the Shirvanshahs or Maiden Tower between sessions; shoulders and knees should be covered. Photography of military installations and checkpoints is prohibited — and circuit perimeter security is extensive, so avoid pointing cameras at barriers or personnel. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory: 10% at restaurants is generous. Friday 25 Sep is a race-week workday — plan FP3 transport early as locals are commuting in parallel with fans.
